Columbus SOUP is considered a charitable organization through our fiscal sponsor, Community Shares of Mid-Ohio. For more than 20 years, Community Shares has built mutually beneficial relationships and secured resources to empower member nonprofits in Central Ohio. Community Shares provides a foundation for its members to build upon through funding, training, and networking opportunities. To learn more visit www.communityshares.net
Donations made to Columbus SOUP are considered charitable contributions and are tax deductible.
A SOUP grant is a one-time gift payment made up of the night’s proceeds and used to help fund a creative project that will have an impact on the Columbus community.
Each quarterly event has a different focusing theme, but they always have a positive local impact. Often, our themes are determined by feedback from past attendees. See some examples of past events.
We ask for a $7 minimum cash donation at the door but encourage everyone to donate as much as they want. The more money donated, the larger the grant given at the end of the night!
The SOUP grant is collected from the entrance donation from each attendee. All of the money collected – 100% of the entrance donations – are used to fund the SOUP grant. Since our grants are created from the night’s proceeds, they vary in amount depending on community participation in the event. The more attendees, the bigger the grant.
All of the food, desserts, raffle items, and the venue for each event are generously donated by local restaurants, personal chefs, artisans, and businesses. Simply put, our events couldn’t happen without the support of these people and businesses.
SOUP may be our name, but it’s not about the food. SOUP is designed to help nourish the community and support local projects that need a little seed money.
At every event, we have homemade soup (at least one vegan) and other delicious options provided by our local sponsors. We make every effort to be sure everyone receives at least one serving because we know there’s nothing quite like sharing a meal together that sparks creativity and passion for a community.
We are always interested in new partnership opportunities! We would love your help! If you are a local restaurant, chef, artisan, or business with an event space, use the Contact Us link above, and we’ll reach out to you.
If you’re local and you have a great idea that needs funding, we’d love to hear from you. Each of our events have a central focusing theme, selected in part by feedback collected in surveys after each event. Go to our Apply page to see what our current theme’s focus is and if your project fits. If you feel your project is a match, complete our application and we’ll reach out to you.
The winner of our grant is chosen solely but the attendees at our event. Everyone who pays for the event earns the right to vote for the winning project. The project with the most votes wins the SOUP grant.
All you need is your $7 minimum donation. The winning project receives all the night’s money at the end of the event. It’s try to keep this all as transparent as possible—as you donate, we’ll keep you posted on the size of the grant. After voting, we hand a big stack of cash (and a fake check) to the winning project.
Why do we say minimum? Because, you can always give MORE money… it always goes to the winning project.
