1) What's your group's background?

A group of creatively inclined friends with connections to the adjacent Milo Arts community opened the gallery at 934 Cleveland Avenue in June 2015.  Since then, many talented individuals have volunteered to keep the gallery going. The arts space continues to host monthly exhibitions and expanded its programming with the first annual 934 Fest – an all-day arts and music festival to benefit 934 – in July 2016.

2) Describe your Project!

934 Fest is the gallery’s annual benefit fundraiser event, featuring a full day of outdoor music performances, live mural creation, kids’ art activities, local artisans and an exhibition in the gallery. The event has taken place in July 2016 and 2017, and in 2018 the event is going to span two days (September 7 & 8).  Admission to the festival is free and it provides an occasion for positive community engagement in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood.  As we expand the reach of the festival, we desire to create better performances and sound by revamping the stage and obtaining dedicated sound equipment. Thus, we are seeking the SOUP Grant for the 934 Community Stage and Sound rejuvenation.  The stage has hosted performances by other groups throughout the season as well, including the local collective DANK (Dope Ass Negro Kids). 

3) What is your goal for this project?

We are expanding 934 Fest to 2 days this year, giving more stage time for musicians and performances. Last year we expanded the grounds by including the back alley and creating new murals wrapping around the gallery and surrounding buildings. This year we hope to create better performances and sound by revamping the stage and obtaining our own sound equipment. The stage we have now needs reinforced and weather proofed.  A PA system will be purchased to insure high quality sound. In years past we have struggled with weather and renting a sound system.

4) How much money do you need and what will you use it for?

Our total budget for stage and sound rejuvenation is $1,925.
The money will be used to purchase a prefabricated canopy, 11’ x 14’ in size, with a metal frame and waterproof canvas top. The $300 stage covering is durable, easy to assemble and perfect for our needs. Sides will be created using outdoor waterproof canvas, purchased at $5.94/yard. Five yards of white will be purchased for the back panel and 8 yards of light gray for the sides. Hardware, grommets and hooks, and fabric for siding will be $150. Repairing damaged wood, and reinforcing the frame of our stage we will use pine 2” x 4”s, approximately $75 for wood. Covering the stage in color and pattern, we will need 5 gallons of high quality outdoor paint, $50 a gallon, totaling $250 in paint. We will need to coat the stage twice with semi-gloss polyurethane (two gallons, totaling $100). In addition, we will purchase a dedicated PA system, which will cost approximately $1,000 (including accessories like cords and stands).
