Picture it… Columbus July 2016.
The place… a street in the heart of the city.
It was a fantastic summer evening full of picnic baskets and blankets. One hundred and forty people gathered to hear about fresh ideas and new initiatives aimed at making their city a better place. Metaphorically (and sometimes literally) breaking bread, they sat in middle of West Cherry Street in the heart of Columbus and became a community.
They heard about how a garden in Linden is trying to bring fruits and vegetables to a food desert.
The Miracle Garden
They heard about how our city’s landmark buildings are crumbling from neglect.
Columbus Landmarks Foundation
They heard about how poor & homeless women struggle to obtain needed feminine hygiene products.
They heard about how a local project brings people together around a slow cooker to support hunger initiatives.
And they heard about how in just six words, our community’s children can express their stories.
Six in the City: Columbus
Together, the #greenspoonarmy created a grant of $2168 to go to our first place project and donated $357 at the raffle table to benefit the night’s second place project. After listening to all five projects, attendees cast their votes, and The Miracle Garden took home the first place grant, along with a certificate for a full day of creative meeting space at Sparkspace! One of our most enthusiastic winners ever, Aunt Flow, took home the second place raffle grant!
A huge shoutout to our hosts and collaborators, Placesmakes:! They did something amazing in our city, and we cannot wait to see what they do next!
As usual, we could not have done with without our sponsors! Be sure to give them some of your love (and by love we mean money) and let them know how much the #greenspoonarmy appreciates their support of SOUP!
